--------------------------------------

now, that it has come to the end, i want to summarize, what fit to this trip:
- 60 days
- 4 countries
- 3 vizas
- 2 letters of invitation
- 6 languages (plus hungarian)
- 3 sim cards (plus hungarian)
- 5 flights
- 13 cities
- distances:
by car / by bus / by train: ~7500 km
on foot: ~700 km
- nights:
in a yurt: 6
in a tent: 7
on the train: 3
in rooms: 43 (in 20 different places)
- 22 days of diarrhoea
- ~38 showers (including the ones without running water)
- longest time without taking a shower: 6 days

what i liked very much:
- nature
- lots of animals around (horses, camels etc)
- yurts
- their traditions
- the kindness of locals
- good food, cakes and amazing bread
- prices
- that they dont speak english
- traditional clothes
- that streets in the cities are either perpendicular or parallel to each other (except tashkent)
even i could not get lost...
- kids: all are very interested about you. they are very proud of knowing the world 'hello', as this is not common in local languages, and they are ready to prove it
- bargains (especially when i succeed)
- spontaneous, unorganized way of traveling (mainly the whole trip)
what i disliked:
- nr 1 (unbeatable): toilets and bathrooms
- no rules, no privacy, no own property
- trash everywhere
- no atms
- lack of driving culture
- they dont stop, when you cross the street
- they dont use safety belt (so couldn't i, because it is not there or does not work at all)
- all wanna know how much you earn, but cannot imagine your higher costs of living at home
- spitting all the time, lack of tissue usage
- they think i am american. or french, but not better either (:
- that i cannot explain them, why i travel alone, and why i have no husband and kids at this age
- the route of the buses is written on them in russian, so by the time i can read it, the bus is gone
- so that i am always dirty
- washing by hand
- no coke zero (((:
and the top10+:
- sitting in a yurt, drinking hot tea, eating fresh bread while ice is raining outside, then falling asleep under 16 kg of blankets
- open the tent door, and having a view of the rising sun on the top of a summit, that is above 5000 m
- getting up the top of the hill, and watching the sun going down over the lake at 3000 m
- having sheep eyes, ear and brain for lunch
- gathering the animals on the back of a horse
- riding a donkey
- fondling a little sheep
- knocking to strangers asking for accomodation or a tea
- taking a toilet outside while 15 camels are staring at you
- making the dishes in the ice-cold spring
- delectating in the masterpieces of islamic architecture
- having vodka for breakfast
- milking a cow at 6 am
- getting off the train after 26 hours
- getting from one location to the other without organizing anything in advance
and approximately how much it cost me:
- airplane tickets: 700 euro
- visas and lois: 240 usd
- other costs (anyway, i have not checked it so thoroughly): ~1100 euro
i dont want to overdraw the beauty of traveling. not at all. there were really bad moments, not only one, when i wished being rather at home... but in these moments there was always someone or something, that helped me going on and on and on. and it was worth it. until the last minute. both the bad and the good parts. because i learned from all. each of them is an experience.
hope i could not decrease your enthusiasm about visiting these places and experiencing something similar. believe me, its just cool!
ok, gotta go home, have my clothes washed, buy an own backpack (zoli, thanks for this one!) and a gas stove, and start planning the next trip... (:

UZ to KZ

-------------------------------------------------
this was definitely not easy. all i wanted is to get from one capital - tashkent - to another - almaty.
i was told, that the border next to tashkent is closed for two years for renovation, so only locals can cross it. it seems, that i am still not a local...
of course, if i pay them 80 euro, everything looked different. but no way... :P
i thought that i may take a train, that is simple. except if the next one comes in two days. great. so lets check the taxis. taxis are a fortune. ok, after negotiating a lot, i agreed on a price of 50 euro (train is 40, so this is ok). but i have a note of 100, and here usd is the king, noone could change it. wow!
soon it come up, that the driver would take me to the border only, i should pay there, and another driver would drive me to almaty. but how can i assure, that i really get there, if i already paid?!?
ok, so lets take a taxi to the border here (50 km), and find another there. for some reason noone really wanted to take me. or maybe for 30 euro, for 1/12 of the road!!! we had a debate of about 2 hours, when a driver shouted on me why i did not get the tarin. so i said ok, he might be right- and went to the cashier.
in a few minutes they came to me and offered me normal prices, but i was just fed up with them... ):
ok, train on the next day. when previously i travelled with train, i wanted to try the one without vagonsю тщеб unintentoinally, i managed. ~80 people in a car. we started with 4 hours of waiting on the border. the best was, that the train standed in a place, so the air did not move at all, no ventillation, windows cannot be opened at all etc. i had an upper bed, that meant, that i could not sit on the bed as there were baggages above. cool... anyway, 26 hours are not that much :P it's so interesting how locals travel: eg noone goes anywhere without a porcelain mug. everyone has at least 5 kilos of fruit. the lady laying under me went to russia to work for a year, and had 10 melons with her (each at least 6 kilos)!!! i dont understand... is it the most important they take for a year?!?
anyway, good to know, that there is a limit of 10 melons on the train, you are not allowed to take more (:
i imagine what if everyone takes the maximum...
we got a pack of all the neccecities that one wants on the way including a comb, shoe-horn , sewing kit etc... except toilet papers in the restroom... (:
there is everything on the train: exchange officers, drinks and sausages to buy, beer, cigarette, and sometimes people to sell clothes!!! unfortunately i could not get a good picture of it.
anyway, here i am again in almaty: great ice cream, chinese restaurant, and first time during my trip: a bath (meaning nothing else, but that i could only take showers until now...)
eating plov somehow compensated part of the above:

megbelyegezve / stigmatized

ja, a busz.

---------------------------------
'tourist', this is written on my forehead with large red letters. and why is it so extra? especially after 50 days in central asia? it is true, that tourists look different here, but uzbekistan is somehow extraordinary. tourist is really someone threated another way. both positive and negative side.
first of all, to teach them english, you can get a lot of help - accomodation, food, guiding, translation etc. everyone is very nice, sometimes even too nice... (:
on the other side: it was pretty weird to experience being a rich tourist from the west! in uzbekistan it is more visible, even though i find it the most developing country in the region.
a few days ago i took a bus from bukhara to urgench. it took a bit more time, then i expected and had to stay in urgench for a night. this is the city, where the cheapest hotel in lp is 20$ (data from 2007), so i really wanted to avoid sleeping here. but i couldnt...
a guy (one of my 'students') from the bus stayed there as well, so he helped me. i was told to pay 40$, which i refused. so they called the manager and offered me 30, then 20$. i told them that i had 10$. so they said ok!!! i did not understand how price could drop to one fourth in a minute, but i was kind of proud of myself achieving a normal price. then i asked the guy, how much he payed - and he said 3$... auch, so after bargaining a lot i got only 3 times as much as a local...
and why i wrote, that tourist is a special spiece here? because everything works like this, but mainly with a huuuge difference. a local pays 200 units, i pay 3500... a bit too much. on the bus, in a cab, accomodation, entrance fee, food... everything. by my opinion there is an acceptable limit, but i just hate paying 17 times as much as a local... ((:
yeah, the bus. 9 hours in the desert without ac, on a crouded bus. no, problem , one has to try thi one as well. here they really keen on regisering me everywhere. so the bus stopped a few times for this. once there was even a passport control, where the controller looked at our passport from the middle of the bus... (:
then came another controller and started packing the spare wheels out of the bus. as i was told later, they were looking for heroine. i was not very happy, being the only tourist on the bus...
but the best part came, when the driver was asked to pack the boot, where ~16 bags of onion took place, and a.... motorcycle on the bottom!!! unfortunately i could not make a good picture of it...
khiva is charming, really! like the castle in budapest, inside the wall you can walk and see the picturesque mosques and metressas. and a dozen of museums everywhere. and the little workshops of local workers creating wooden stuffs, carpets etc.
oh, and my favourite: i wanted to buy a sim card, because i could not use my kyrgyz one (i needed a separate one for roaming). but here i am not allowed to buy a prepaid sim card without an uzbeg passport!!! no comment... (:

bukhara

-------------------------------------------

hot... soooo hot... unbelievable. but what can one expect in the middle of the desert? the internet says it is only 34 C, but i think they mixed the two numbers... i just cannot do anything but looking for water, sitting, and suffering a bit, when walking (:

ok, this is not 100% true. here i am in bukhara. there was train ticket only for the first class, so for an extra 1.5 eur i could enjoy a huge leather seat, even with private plasma. of course the local one - i mean one from china.

i saw all the minarets and medressas that can be found nearby. here it goes:

after 3 hours of walking in hot, we found a great place, on the top of a 2-storey house, where they served very tasty food. i could enjoy an amazing view of the above mentioned buildings.

the place itself is very similar to samarkant, and i think that khiva will be a third place, that will look like this. but markets here are also amazing!

to be honest, i am a bit fed up with the agressive and pushy style of local sellers. i understand that they wanna sell everything, but there is a limit, when it's pretty hard to tolerate it... and it is a bit disappointing, that the beautiful, thousand-year old building are just full of sellers everywhere... kind of loosing the real value and athmosphere of the place ):

2009. aug. 20.

elo a hosszunadraggal! / prepare your long pants!

ok, uzbekistan. i was really surprised. more developed, then i thought before, and totally different from kyrgyzstan.
the border: half an hour of queueing, debating (not me but the others!) and pushing i was still standing at the same place, if not even a bit more back in the line... so, samarrkant will not be reached by the evening. and i was right. (:
i was told to go on the side to check, if i need extra checking for my baggage (people were queueing with a plastic bag only). this was my luck, because one of the controllers took me with shouting 'tourist', and let me go on the first gate. i got a paper to fill up, and hel in 4 languages: russian, kyrgyz, uzbek and i could not realize the last one. ((:
then someone came and helped. i had to list all the money i had (exact amounts! - still i dont know how to declare my credit card), and the context of my backpack... hehe, funny... but they took it really seriously. and then they started analyzing my backpack in my presence. they had a look on all my pictures in my camera and i had to explain them, where i was and where i took them, where i slept etc. would i dare to say no?!?
changing money is cool. the biggest note they have is ~half a euro. so i changed 2 pieces of paper to a kilo (left to right):in the evening i realized, that the country is a bit more expensive, so i had to find an atm. this is really challenging here. after visiting 4 banks (no atms!!!) and 3 hotels (atms are out of order), i found a cashier, that gave me some money. it made me really tired... especially with my 20 kg backpack on my back...
next day i took a train and now i am in samarkant! this is amazing. i have never been to a place, where the islamic impact is so huge. and everything is about timur
but the police is a bit corrupt. and entering to a place you can often see policemen sitting in front of the minaret and asking for extra money to let you in... anyway, i wont let myself being upset on it.
so, the weather is great, food is delicious, everything is nice, i cannot say more. i let the pictures speak instead of me:
